I am able to research and retrieve those records which are available within the public
domain but prospective clients should be aware that not all military records have
survived. Searches are conducted at locations such as, The National Archives, National
Army Museum, The Imperial War Museum, The British Library and accessible Regimental
and Military Museum collections
I am able to offer research in the following fields; Regimental Muster Rolls, Campaign and Service Medal awards and Gallantry awards. Individual service records of the Royal Navy (including Royal Marines), Army and Air Force Officers service records, Operational Records of the Army for the First and Second War periods and can include records for individual units and Higher Command structures, Casualty records, Prisoner of War reports, Royal Navy operational records, Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force operational records, and First World War Women’s service records
I am not able to research individual service records of men who served in the Armed
Forces after 1921. These records are retained by the Ministry of Defence and should
be obtained by personal application by the immediate next of kin directly to the
Ministry of Defence. Further advice can be given about this if required. The links
below lead to the relevant department for each of the services.
What do I need from you before proceeding with your request?
In short as many details about your individual as you can provide. What may seem
insignificant at the time may be the vital clue which leads to that positive result
and a fully detailed portfolio. In addition to personal details, items such as individual
or unit photographs also assist and may provide possible dating evidence and potentially
identification of a unit if not already identified.
As far as individuals are concerned then the following are good starting points; Full name, date of birth, place of birth, residence, next of kin, service / Regimental number, Rank, Unit, date of death (if in service)
If you are in possession of the subjects medals please examine the rims as they may
be etched with the precise details you may need e.g. name, rank, number and unit.
Even if these details are not known searches can still be undertaken on a name search.
This may affect the time taken and in some cases make confirmation more difficult.
Tom Smith or David Jones, for example would result in multiple traces and without
more detailed information, present difficulty in confirming that the correct serviceman
had been located.
In the case of units and operational records then the following questions should be considered; Do you have the full title of the unit or ship concerned? In the case of Army units there can be an element of confusion if the full title is not known. Cavalry and infantry regiments can be fairly straight forward but for a man serving in the Royal Artillery or Royal Engineers for example, a sub unit such as Battery or Company can assist. What specific period or periods are you interested in?
Are you seeking information concerning specific individuals within the unit or particular actions or events?
Please pass details of your research request via email or, if you wish, complete and forward the Initial Research request form, or you can post your request with relevant information as provided in on the Contacts Page.
